California Squid Fishing

These pictures from a day at sea with the squid fishing fleet illustrate the path from the ocean to your table.

A squid boat leaves the port of Monterey, California.

A particularly rich school of squid has attracted several fishing boats.

A skiff anchors one end of the net, while the vessel quickly encircles the school of squid.

After drawing the net together around the catch, the squid is ready to be hauled aboard.

The fresh catch flows into the hold filled with refrigerated seawater. Observe the bright colors of the squid.
